Hunting Down the ELCA Ads

Jody writes of her son and his friends hunting down all of the ads this weekend -- what a good idea! Because 36 ads are on the sides of buses this could make for hours of fun.

I’ve been able to track down more info on what’s out there and I must say that there is a lot more than I thought. Here is the breakdown:

• 10 large billboards
• 44 smaller billboards
• 48 bus shelters
• 36 sides of buses
• 7 print ad insertions
• Skyscraper and box ads on aol.com
• Skyscraper and box ads on denverpost.com
• 60 congregations in the Denver area have been provided marketing kits that include postcards, posters, bulletin inserts, print ads, bookmarks, and more.

I’ve often heard people say that their congregation feels isolated from the larger church. With this in mind another adventure could be tracking down each ELCA congregation in the area. All of congregations have vinyl banners for this ad campaign – find out where they are and how they use the signage. The Web site offers a nifty map and listing of all the area churches check it out at: http://www.elca.org/love/find/

If print is your thing look up the ads that have already published:
Denver Post 1/4 pg color, September 4
Rocky Mountain news: 1/4 pg color, September 4
Daily Camera: full page color, September 2

And be on the lookout for:
Denver Post ¼ pg color, September 25
Rocky Mountain News ¼ pg color, September 25
Daily Camera ¼ pg color, September 16, ¼ pg color, September 23

I don’t have a lot of info on today’s news conference but will keep my eyes and ears open. If anyone hears or sees something post it to this blog. All are welcome!

ELCA Meeting the Media in Denver

A breakfast is scheduled for tomorrow to introduce the ELCA advertising campaign. According to “The Cherry Creek News and Central Dispatch” (www.thecherrycreeknews.com/content/view/1713/741) the ELCA is bringing out some VIPs from the churchwide office in Chicago and the ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod to comment on “this unique pilot campaign and its purposes.”

We should expect to hear from:

-- Kristi S. Bangert, director, ELCA Communication Services, Chicago (she was the person who developed the “Print ads for Congregations” that can be found at: www.elca.org/elcaads/)
-- The Rev. Allan C. Bjornberg, bishop, ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod, Denver
-- The Rev. Kent A. Mueller, director for administration and communication, ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod, Denver
-- Linda Bobbitt, vice president, ELCA Rocky Mountain Synod

I am interested in what they have to say and hope that there is a good media turnout. This is something new and exciting for an old Lutheran like me - something that doesn’t happen every day in a church that is often portrayed as being stogy.
Here is the schedule for the print ads:

September 16: Daily Camera
September 23: Daily Camera
September 25: Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News

The outdoor advertising can be found at:

N Colorado Blvd. 4205 Ws .25 mi S/O I-70 F/N
N Federal 6735 Ws .50 mi S/O Us 36 F/N
I-70 Ss .75 mi W/O Wadsworth 2 F/E
E Colfax 1801 Ns .50 mi W/O York St F/W
W Colfax 4405 Ns .60 mi E/O Sheridan F/W

Quebec St 4205 Ws 1000.00 ft S/O I-70 F/S
W Alameda 1434 Ss .50 mi W/O Sante Fe F/E
S Sante Fe 1290 Es .20 mi S/O Mississippi F/S
S Federal 2322 Es 1500.00 ft S/O Evans F/S

We’ll be seeing the ads in print and on the billboards for the whole month of September. Hopefully Denver will be just the first of many such campaigns across the country.

I still love the tag line: “God’s Work. Our Hands.” It has a nice ring to it and says a whole lot in very few words.

Ciao for now.

God's Work. Our Hands

The ELCA launched their Denver area AD campaign over the weekend and it looks great! The new tag line is even better: "God's Work. Our Hands."

The ads point out merely a fraction of the good things this church is doing such as:

+The church in S.D. that feeds over 400 homeless people, serving them healthy food on real china and using real silverware. "God's Work. Our Hands."

+The 1,300,000 service hours logged in by Katrina volunteers. "God's Work. Our Hands."

+Teaching reading to 2,600 illiterate women in Senegal. "God's Work. Our Hands."

+Seed grants given to low-income nursing students, helping people help themselves. "God's Work. Our Hands."

+A free health clinic in Milwaukee to help the working poor who can't afford health insurance. "God's Work. Our Hands."

There is also a new Web site displaying all of the ads and the stories behind them. You can even send an ad of your choosing to friends and family with e-cards. Check it out at: www.elca.org/love.

GOD's WORK. OUR HANDS! Being Lutheran never felt like this before.

More than sex -- ELCA Chruchwide Assembly

The 2007 ELCA Churchwide Assembly is over – Hallelujah!

Despite rumors to the contrary it wasn’t all about sex. Yes, there is no denying it, sex was a major issue with the visiting press (surprise, surprise), but many more important things went down at the ELCA Churchwide Assembly on Navy Pier here in Chicago.

Here are but a few:

- The Rev. Mark S. Hanson was re-elected bishop on the second ballot.

- David Swartling was elected as secretary of the church. Swartling, a Seattle trial lawyer, will succeed the Rev. Lowell Almen, the first and only secretary of the ELCA. Almen is retiring on Reformation Day after many loyal years of dedicated service.

- The five-year initiative “Book of Faith: Lutherans Read the Bible,” was endorsed by the assembly. This project came out of a 2005 North Carolina Synod proposal that stressed the importance of Scripture. The initiative is headed by Dr. Diane L. Jacobson, a professor of Hebrew and Old Testament at Luther Seminary in Minneapolis. I had the pleasure of attending Dr. Jacobson’s workshop on the Psalms, which she lead at the Worship Jubilee (held immediately prior to the assembly). Jacobson is brilliant and knows her subject. I can’t think of a better person to lead this initiative.

According to the new “Book of Faith” Web site (http://www.elca.org/bookoffaith) a Blog will be up and running in Sept. It is intended to be a place to share resources and ideas, “What are you trying? What is working? What resources are needed to help, which need to be developed.”

- Perhaps the most exciting part of the whole assembly was the unveiling of an advertising campaign scheduled to hit the Denver area on September 1.

It is cool to see my church in public places -- buses, billboards and print ads – it reminds me of when I was a kid and felt proud when “brought to you by the Lutheran Church in America” was announced at the end of a “Davey and Goliath” episode.

The ads highlight the “good” things the church is doing here in the U.S. and around the world – 1,300,000 service hours logged in by Katrina volunteers, 2,600 illiterate women in Senegal being taught to read, hungry children in Peru given bread – all of this summed up nicely in a great tagline: “God’s Work. Our Hands.”

The artwork for the advertising is beautifully done and I hear it didn’t cost an arm and a leg to produce either. There is a smoking new Web site where all of the ads and the stories behind them are posted and it looks like a lot of thought and good work went into producing them. Check out the Web site at: elca.org/love.
